Grandma Nitti's Kitchen 中西美食 (Taipei)

05 June 2013

We were imagining pancakes WITH (fresh) blueberries on the side, not blueberries inside the pancakes. But anyhow, the pancakes dough were sucky. Eggs Ben were not bad so it kinda pulls up the scores a bit, but I'd still rather use that money to buy ourselves like five (or more) sets of local breakfasts.

Fu Hang Dou Jiang 阜杭豆漿 (Taipei)

04 June 2013
The shop opens at 5.30am, and here was the queue when we arrived at 5.50am.

From the second floor all the way down to the first. This makes the longest queue I've seen in Taipei so far, and they're mostly locals, which is good.

A peek into the open kitchen. The way they do their 燒餅 (Shao Bing) is like our naan.

After a 45-minute wait, here's what we got - 咸豆漿 (salted soy milk), 豆漿 (sweet soy milk), 油條 (fried fritters), 厚燒餅 (thick roasted flatbread), and 蔥花蛋 (scallion omelette).

Everything was so satisfying especially the 咸豆漿, which tasted a bit like porridge, and the 油條 that is mega crispy. We're not that a fan of their 厚燒餅 - perhaps the thinner version (薄燒餅) or the ones with fillings would be better.

They only use firewood for all their pizzas.

NTD 270 for both pizzas with unique flavours and overload of toppings is truly a steal.

Kanpai 乾杯 本店 @ Dunhua South Rd (Taipei)

02 June 2013
One of the most popular spots that youngsters hang out at. Even if you made reservations, be prepared to wait up to half an hour.

Delicious Yakiniku, paired with great music, great atmosphere, and great service.

There are games hosted everyday at 8pm that you can take part in (e.g. drinking contest). On top of that, if you're buey paiseh (not shy) enough, approach a staff and tell them that you want to play "親親" (kiss kiss) - simply lock your lips with someone else (same or opposite gender) for 10 seconds, let them take a photo, and you'll get a free plate of meat.

Tadah! This was what we got!

The Cajun Kings

28 May 2013

Recommended by the staff, this dish is similar to 'The King's Wings,' but much juicier!

Favourite starter.

The crab and lobster were the main reason we went to The Cajun Kings for, and they did not disappoint.

All seafood came piping hot in big plastic bags.

There were no forks, no knives, no spoons, and not even plates. Just a lined table top (which makes your plate), a wooden board and hammer, and a bib for everyone.. You know it's gonna be a rowdy grubby affair ;)

Our first Boston lobster! (Look how messy the table had became already.)

Interesting ice-cream cookie.

Although the prices there aren't exactly cheap - $80 for one crab (which has more meat) and $70 for one lobster, it was worth every cent. I've never eaten seafood in such fashion ('cos I'm usually very conscious about getting both hands dirty) but I'd say I really enjoyed it wholeheartedly. This is THE place to eat your heart out!

Mexout

27 May 2013
Mexout is like subway in Mexican style.

Customisable from inside out - burrito / taco / nachos / rice, fillings, meat, vegetables, salsa, sauce, everything!

Building our own tacos was fun. I concluded that I prefer them "street style" (corn tortilla), and sour cream and guacamole are a must!

Burritos come in two sizes - 8 inch for $9 and 12 inch for $13 if you're really hungry.

Lunchtimes are usually packed with office people doing takeaways, but when night comes, it's actually a pretty nice place to chill.
